picTrove August Release: A Faster, Smoother Way to Discover and Enjoy Photos & GIFs

August brings a big update to picTrove, and this one is all about making photo discovery more enjoyable—from finding new images, to exploring entire collections, to simply getting out of the way when you’re done looking.

We’re excited to bring the August release to both iOS and Android, with new discovery features, a brand-new slideshow experience, smoother browsing, and a number of improvements under the hood.

✨ Meet Slideshow Mode

Sometimes you don’t want to search. You just want to sit back and enjoy great photography.

The new (to Android) Slideshow mode lets you do exactly that, with 11 beautiful animated transitions designed to make moving from one photo to the next feel natural and engaging.

We’ve also added a new Slideshow Settings screen, where you can customize your experience and manage slideshow transitions.

Whether you’re discovering something new or just want some visual inspiration, Slideshow gives you a new way to enjoy picTrove.

🖼️ Welcome, Unsplash

picTrove now has another source for discovering photos: Unsplash.

That means even more images to explore and more opportunities to stumble across something unexpected. We’ve added Unsplash alongside the existing photo sources so you can keep searching without having to jump between apps.

🔎 Explore Everything From a Website with Yandex

Searching for images from a particular website? Yandex just got a lot more useful.

The new “All from site” option lets you browse every image available from a website, rather than limiting your search to a specific query. It’s a great way to turn a single search result into a much broader exploration of a site.

🎞️ Discover Every GIF from a Creator with Giphy

Giphy now has a similar superpower.

When available, the new “All by user” option lets you browse all GIFs from a particular creator. Find one GIF you like? Now you can easily explore more of that creator’s work without having to start a completely new search.

👆 A Much Faster Way to Close the Photo Viewer

One of the smallest changes in this release might become one of your favorites.

When you’re viewing a photo full-screen, you can now swipe down to quickly dismiss the viewer.

No hunting for a close button. No reaching for a corner of the screen. Just swipe down and keep exploring. It’s a simple gesture, but it makes browsing feel considerably more fluid—especially when you’re opening lots of photos in a row.

👤 More Useful Photo Details

Photo details now give you more information at a glance.

You’ll see user avatars, along with the photo’s file size and resolution, making it easier to understand what you’re looking at and, when relevant, who created it.

⚙️ A New Settings Experience on Android

We’ve also introduced a new Settings screen where you can manage slideshow transitions and keep an eye on disk usage.

It gives you a more convenient place to control some of picTrove’s behavior and understand how much storage the app is using.

🍎 A Major Under-the-Hood Upgrade on iOS

The visible features are only part of this release.

On iOS, we’ve significantly reworked the internal implementation responsible for photo downloading and display, replacing the previous approach with a new, battle-tested framework that is now part of picTrove.

At the same time, we’ve completed a major modernization of the underlying iOS stack by moving it completely from the legacy Objective-C implementation to Swift.

You may not see that work directly in the UI, but it gives us a much stronger foundation for improving picTrove going forward—with an architecture that’s easier to maintain, evolve, and build new experiences on.

And most importantly, it contributes to the performance and stability improvements included in this release.

💫 More to Enjoy

Alongside all of these features, we’ve made additional performance and stability improvements across the apps.

So whether you’re looking for a new favorite photo, exploring an entire website, discovering a creator’s GIF collection, or simply relaxing with a slideshow, the August release makes picTrove a little more enjoyable to use.

The August release is now available on both iOS and Android.

Thank you for using picTrove—and keep exploring! 📸✨
